Reformed confessions

One of the products of the Reformation era was the production of Reformed confessions, including our three Reformed confessions, the Heidelberg Catechism, the Belgic Confession and the Canons of Dort.В  It is not coincidence that the era of the Reformation was also an era of confessional expression.В  It is also not a surprise, then, that the church of the Reformation that continues to this day is a church of confessional expression. Many see confessions in a negative light, giving many reasons for such a vision.В  In general, they see confessions as obstacles.В  Some see confessions as stumbling blocks to church unity or to the spreading of the gospel.В  People fear creeds and confessions will be placed on par with, or be substituted for the authority of the Scriptures.В  Others see creeds as roadblocks to a simpler day, an apostolic day when formal creedal standards did not get in the way of simple Scriptural truths.
